Leah Hunter, PhD (she/her)
Dr. Leah Hunter is a Certified School Psychologist and Licensed Psychologist. She also holds an appointment as Research Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of Pittsburgh. She specializes in developmental and neuropsychological testing for children and adolescents and strengths-based parent coaching.
Dr. Hunter has worked in schools, private practice, and university settings, providing culturally-sensitive, strengths-based assessment and therapy. Her specialty is providing comprehensive evaluations for childhood diagnoses such as developmental delay, autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and mood disorders (depression/anxiety). Through her work at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Hunter is also trained in an evidence-based, collaborative parent coaching program, The Family Check-Up, and she uses current research on evidence-based practices for young children and families to inform her recommendations. Her assessment is highly tailored to each child’s needs, and she also seeks to understand the unique strengths and challenges presented in the child’s family during assessment and treatment planning. Her favorite part of her clinical work is helping families to see strengths in themselves and their child that they might have otherwise overlooked, and seeing them find clarity through the assessment process.
Dr. Hunter’s experience as a mother to two young boys is integral to her identity as a clinician and allows for deep compassion for the complex work of parenting. Dr. Hunter considers herself an ally and practices cultural humility, treating each individual as the expert in their own life experience, even if it differs from hers.
Dr. Hunter graduated with a PhD in School Psychology from Penn State in 2019. She has worked at the University of Pittsburgh since 2021.
